Halloween is Happening in Vallejo
by Dalia Vidor | Published October 13th, 2021
Halloween is our favorite holiday. It’s a secular celebration of the supernatural based on ancient Celtic and Druid traditions, melded with Roman and Christian celebrations as well. Here’s a great simple article about the origins of Halloween on History.com.
I have many fond memories of trick-or-treating with my friends around the neighborhood, including one year we were clearly too old to be going house to house asking for candy. My Girl Scout leader and her family were a REALLY into Halloween and their house was one of those exceptionally decorated affairs that would draw crowds from around the Bay Area, complete with a live vampire (my friend Shannon) who would pop out of a coffin at you and a smoking caldron you had to stick your hand into to get your candy. We’d always pile into the car after thoroughly trick-or-treating through our own neighborhood, to visit them – where, as friends, we would get to enter their home to see the inside which was equally as elaborately decorated.
Then my Mom would drive around to different neighborhoods where we’d find the “good” candy and decorated homes too. My mother didn’t allow us to go to more than one or two outside neighborhoods because it would have been greedy to not leave candy for the other little girls and boys also trick-or-treating, filling their buckets and pillow cases with the coveted chocolate and despised pennies and raisins.
Needless to say last year’s Halloween sucked – and not in a good Vampire movie way (thanks Covid). But this year Dr. Walensky of the CDC says it’s ok to go trick-or-treating!
And it’s ok to visit Haunted Houses and Attractions so long as they do not take place in a small enclosed space, attendees wear masks and are able to socially distance. Attending events taking place outdoors and in large well ventilated spaces are encouraged if you plan on ghoul-ing out.
