Mare Island Heritage Trust
Founded in 1854, the Mare Island Naval Shipyard is the oldest Naval installation in the Pacific, and the start of a 142 year legacy of dedicated military service and a rich mixture of historic resources. On April 1, 1996, Mare Island Naval Shipyard officially closed. Vast natural habitats and a summit of panoramic vistas span seven counties and create stellar views of Mt. Tamalpais and Mt. Diablo and the East Bay hills. Inlets and surrounding salt marshes protect rare plants and habitat. Shorelines, piers, wetlands, coastal chaparral and grasslands attract and support a wide diversity of wildlife.
