Did you know the City of Vallejo has six Sister Cities and three Friendship Cities around the world and is about to add a seventh Sister City?

History of the Sister City movement: in 1956 President Eisenhower sponsored a White House Conference to explore ways to encourage and preserve world peace. One of the suggestions coming from that conference was to create a conduit for citizens at a local level to link with local citizens in other countries without the formalities that exist in dealings between nations.

From that concept, Sister Cities International (SCI) was born with the goal of promoting peace by developing mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation between citizens of different countries – one individual, one community at a time.

In 1960, the Vallejo City Council appointed a committee to explore the possibility of joining that movement. A few months later, Vallejo linked with Trondheim in Norway as their first Sister City. Vallejo, CA was one of the few cities that heeded the call of President Eisenhower in 1960!!

Vallejo has been involved in the Sister City movement through SCI for sixty-two years. In 1971, the committee was given commission status and the Vallejo Sister City Association was formed to provide an opportunity for others who wished to share in the benefits of international friendships.

Sister City is a volunteer organization of ordinary citizens who promote peace through people-to-people relationships—with program offerings varying greatly from basic cultural exchange programs to shared research and development projects between cities.

Vallejo’s Sister Cities are: Trondheim, Norway(1960); Akashi, Japan(1968); La Spezia, Italy(1987); Baguio, Philippines(1993); Bagamoyo, Tanzania (1993); Jincheon, South Korea(2002); and soon to be official, Ensenada, Mexico.

Friendship Cities are: Muju, South Korea;Rota, Northern Mariana Islands;Parun, Afghanistan; and Ensenada, Mexico.

Want to find out more about the Sister City movement? Join us at our Annual Meeting/Open House on Saturday, January 14, 2023 from 1 until 5pm in the Vallejo Room, (old JFK Children’s Library) and the Sister City Room.
