MARE ISLAND SOUND WALK

  • 1015 Walnut Avenue Vallejo, CA, 94592 United States (map)

Walking through three different locations on Mare Island, we will ask the question of how we perceive places differently through listening.

What is a sound? How do we listen in different environments? What does it mean to focus on listening as a primary sense, and to work with sound as an artistic medium?

Walking through three different locations on Mare Island, we will ask the question of how we perceive places differently through listening. As artists working with sound, we will share our interests and methodologies relating to creative and critical engagements with land use present and past, social, and ecological, while encouraging a participatory environment for discussion and curiosity as we go.

On Saturday March 16th, we will meet for coffee, have an introductory talk, go on a sound walk, write a sound journal entry, share a group discussion, then visit an amplified tree sound installation by Jen Boyd. We hope you will join us! (Limited to 25 guests).

Jen Boyd is a sound artist and teacher living in Vallejo CA. She spends time recording sounds in her environment and then arranges them into layered soundscapes. In these pieces, some sounds unfold naturally while others are processed. Jen uses a variety of different microphones to explore the textures and timbers in her environment. Many of her soundscapes seek to give depth to these delicate sounds. Although her work mostly relies on ‘natural’ sounds she uses a wide variety of sound sources to paint sonic pictures for the listener. Jen hopes to spark the interest in people of all ages to listen more closely to the environment they live in everyday.

Kevin Corcoran works with an open interest in sound as medium as it moves through contexts of music, art, communication, and place. Combining sounds of percussion, field recordings and electronics with photography, text, and objects, his work takes form as performance, publication, and installation. He improvises, arranges sound, and collaborates across disciplines and borders in the US, Mexico, Europe, and East Asia, with musicians, dancers, writers, filmmakers, and sculptors. From Sacramento, he is currently based in San Francisco and Santa Cruz.
