Speaker Series: Incredible Journey

Mare Island Historic Park Foundation

Join Dr. Rob Hoffman of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory and the Mare Island Historic Park Foundation as we take you on a journey that begins in the high desert of Nevada at the peak of the Cold War and follows a connection that takes you back to the allied invasion of the Philippines at the height of World War II.

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BELIEVE WHAT DR. HOFFMAN AND HIS TEAM FOUND!

In 2015 Dr. Hoffman came across a massive gun turret that sat abandoned for decades in the high desert of Nevada’s nuclear test site. It served as a vital sensor platform when powerfull explosions were rattling the desert as part of the most intense series of nuclear tests in American history, but what were its origins? His Journey to find out led him to Mare Island Naval Shipyard and back seventy-eight years in time when United States battlefleets steamed into the Lingayen Gulf as part of a massive operation to liberate the Philippines. In conducting his research, he came across combat video that, when enhanced by his team of specialists, revealed one of the most dramatic moments ever captured on film.

Hear this amazing story within the majestic and historic Saint Peter’s Chapel with its Tiffany-Stained Glass windows on full display in the afternoon light.
